Education Degree
So you have decided to get an education degree, what a great choice! The requirements you will need to meet in order to teach can vary very much depending on grade level, your location and your education specialty. If you plan on teaching elementary, kindergarten, middle school or high school then you will need to get a bachelors degree first. If you plan on teaching at the college level then you will need to have at least a masters degree.
What to look for in your education degree
When you are looking for a program to pursue you will have several choices. However, the final choice should be made on the basis of answering the following questions.
What is the area of specialty you plan on studying? Subjects like English and reading versus subjects like math and science. You can also specialize further in things like adult education or special education.
Do you want to teach at public or private institutions? Private may have more stringent requirements because the competition is stiffer.
What is the future growth potential of your chosen field?
Do you want to teach the arts? Subjects like music and art tend to be the first programs that get eliminated when budget problems come up. This may be something to consider.
Answering these questions will help you determine what area may be best suited for you. That way you are able to obtain an education degree which will lead to plenty of career opportunities.
Understanding program coursework
When you are looking for an education degree program to enter into, you want to make sure they include courses on how to deal and interact with students. Your success as a teacher is going to be dependent on the success of your future students. You want to look for programs that offer you the chance to work individually and also as part of a group. I recommend programs that include courses stressing educational psychology and communication skills.
Teaching internships
The education degree program you get into should offer you the chance to get some hands on experience without actually being a fully fledged teacher yet. This hands on experience should come in the form of supervised teaching lessons helping you acclimate yourself to a classroom environment. This can also be known as “student teaching”.
Understand that getting an education degree and becoming a licensed teacher is not the end. You will be required to complete certain certifications depending on your state and city. You will also have to undergo periodic reviews and testing to ensure you are doing a quality job.
